Only Jennifer Simons and Gregory Russia are officially nominated for the presidential and vice presidential seats, respectively. Because they have been nominated separately, the vote in The National Assembly lapses: they are elected by acclamation.
President Ashwin Adhin announced that during Thursday's housekeeping session, the organization of parliament will be further shaped. Among other things, the group leaders and their deputies will be installed then, as well as the admission, removal and election committees. Final preparations for Sunday elections will also be gone through and the Assembly will receive an update on the remaining procedural steps.
Simons and Russia's inauguration is scheduled for Tuesday, July 16, at the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall, where a select company will participate in the ceremony.
Adhin stressed that the scripts have gained momentum because of the tight schedule. He, therefore, urges the Ministry of Finance and Planning to release the necessary budgets in time for the ceremony to run smoothly.
President Chan Santokhi, in consultation with his successors, has pledged his full cooperation for a smooth transition. Adhin is counting on all agencies involved to fulfill their responsibilities punctually so that the change of power goes off without a hitch.
