What began in 2021 as a small-scale regional consultation event between industry and government has now grown into one of the most important energy events in the Caribbean and South America. The 2025 edition promises to attract more than 12,000 visitors and over 250 participating companies. The combination of a three-day technical conference and a four-day Executive Summit shows how broad the event has now become.
A new location for a new phase
The choice of Roeli's Event Venue was driven by the need for more space and a more integrated experience. Unlike previous editions where conference components were spread across different rooms and buildings, the new venue offers one cohesive space for all tracks and exhibits. This should lead to a more efficient program and stronger networking opportunities.
Still, the site change is not without its challenges. Kronenburg Road is a busy thoroughfare, and the organization acknowledges that traffic congestion is expected. Measures to limit inconvenience are being prepared in consultation with the authorities.
A changing Suriname
Behind this apparent logistical change lies a deeper development. Suriname has undergone a meteoric transition in recent years from exploration country to potential deepwater oil producer. With the long-awaited Final Investment Decision (FID) taken for the first offshore production project - led by TotalEnergies and APA Corporation in Block 58 - the energy dialogue in Suriname has become more complex and urgent.
The SEOGS 2025 responds to this strategically. Policy discussions this year will undoubtedly focus on the practical implementation of FID, local capacity building, fiscal models and the balance between operations and sustainability. At the same time, technical sessions will bring together engineers and operators around innovations in deepwater technology, subsea installations and safety.
The big question: can the infrastructure keep up with the content?
While the move to Roeli's Venue supports a necessary scale-up, it remains to be seen whether the new setting can handle the complexity of the current moment. The future of SEOGS as a catalyst for policy making and market development depends on the ability of its organizational infrastructure to move with the geopolitical and technical realities of Suriname's energy sector.
SEOGS 2025 will be more than a conference. It is a barometer of where Suriname stands in its oil ambitions - and where it wants to go. The location may have changed, but the core remains the same: This is where the conversations that will shape the country's energy future will be held.
