Government bets on transformation of aviation as engine for Surinamese growth

The new government is making a major restructuring of the airline sector a spearhead of its economic policy. President Jennifer Simons stressed that the unstable operation of the Suriname Airlines (SLM) and widespread bottlenecks within the sector call for a crash course in reorganization. "Although SLM is currently operating at a loss, it remains vital to our connection to the world," Simons said. In the opening week of her tenure, she already held discussions with SLM management and other stakeholders to agree on immediate solution directions.

An additional complicating factor is the blacklist recently struck by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority Suriname (CASAS): a bind that puts heavy pressure not only on SLM, but also on local airport operators and charter companies. The government is therefore going to conduct a thorough audit of laws and regulations, safety protocols and financial flows. In this way, it wants to quickly get a clear picture of where investments, legal adjustments and organizational interventions are having the greatest impact.

A resilient aviation climate is inextricably linked to the development of tourism, which is seen as a growth engine for employment and foreign exchange. President Simons announced a strengthening of the Suriname Tourism Board and the creation of specialized task forces that will work with private investors and international experts to develop concrete growth plans. "New routes, better connections and quality flight experience are the backbone of our tourism offerings," she stated, "and only by coupling legislative and fiscal incentives with strict safety standards can we restore the confidence of airlines and travelers alike."

For Suriname, this policy emphasis means multiple opportunities. A profitable and reliable aviation infrastructure not only attracts more visitors, but also stimulates the export of agricultural products, the inflow of business investment and the accessibility of domestic regions. Regional airports can become hubs for eco- and cultural tourism, while a streamlined organization and renewed alliance forms with international carriers will allow SLM to operate profitably over time.

The short-term agenda includes revising the national aviation legislation and establishing a public-private investment fund for airport facilities. In the medium term, the government aims to certify CASAS to international IOSA standards, a prerequisite for direct entry into global aviation networks. In this way, Suriname aims to strengthen its air bridge with the rest of the world and give new impetus to the national economy through tourism, trade and investment.
