New technical committee lifts Suriname security to international level

With the virtual installation of a new Technical Commission on Security Standards under the wings of the Suriname Standards Bureau (SSB), Suriname is putting a strategic point on the map of professional security. This commission will be tasked with translating international guidelines into practice-oriented rules for our country so that local security companies can work to the highest quality standards.

Thanks to a licensing agreement with the British British Standards Institution (BSI), standards used worldwide are now formally applicable in Suriname. The range of standards extends from advanced camera surveillance protocols and alarm systems to personal security, trained security dogs, cyber defense measures and the monitoring of critical infrastructure. As a result, private security services and government agencies will soon be working from one common framework.

In his remarks, Acting SSB Director Tanwir Hassankhan emphasized that uniform, up-to-date guidelines are crucial as threats increasingly come in through digital channels. With uniform standards, the entire sector - from the Safety & Security Academy to the National Army and security entrepreneurs such as Securitas, Surinam Protection NV and Muhaarib Security - will have a shared basis for quality assurance.

For Suriname, this move means more than just administrative alignment: it contributes to a more transparent and consistent market, where both domestic and international clients can place their trust in our security professionals. By applying uniform criteria, it not only grows the effectiveness of security measures, but also stimulates the development of specialized training and technological innovation in the sector. Over time, this may lead to a more resilient country, where citizens, businesses and critical infrastructures are better protected against increasingly complex forms of crime.
