Canelo vs. Crawford: the Boxing World upside down

It is a clash that crosses the boundaries of weight classes, egos and careers. On Sept. 13, 2025, two of the most dominant boxers of their generation will meet at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas: Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) and the unbeaten Terence "Bud" Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). What's at stake? The undisputed super-middleweight title, honor, reputation and perhaps Canelo's last dance in the ring.

Crawford on hunts

Terence Crawford is making a bold move: moving up two weight classes to take on Canelo's strength and experience. To many, this would be reckless. But Crawford, a triple world champion in as many weight classes, is no ordinary challenger. During a tense press conference in New York, he showed that, too. After Canelo harshly pushed him off, Crawford coolly replied, "I'm going to hunt you down in that ring."

The words are not marketing, but a declaration of war.

Canelo under pressure

Mexican legend Canelo Álvarez is at a crossroads. His recent victory against Cuban William Scull in May was viewed by fans and analysts as dull and tactical. A unanimous decision without the fire one has come to expect from him. Promoter Turki Alalshikh, co-host under Dana White's new TKO Boxing label, publicly announced "no more boring title fights." He links a huge bonus to a knockout.

Canelo himself hints at retirement before age 37, making this clash possibly one of his last appearances in the boxing circus.

Experts divided: strength versus precision

Amir Khan, a boxer who has faced both fighters, warns that Canelo's brute strength may not deter Crawford enough: "Crawford reads fights like a chess master." In contrast, trainer Derrick James emphasizes that Bud's confidence has never been higher: "He fights with a composure you only see in greats."

What makes this duel unique is that there is no clear favorite. Canelo is the champion, stronger, heavier, with more experience at this level. Crawford is faster, smarter and has an adaptability that is legendary.

Netflix, millions and global attention

The global impact of this fight is unparalleled. Netflix is broadcasting the duel worldwide, once again underscoring the platform's sports ambitions. The choice of Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium, with a capacity of more than 65,000, guarantees a spectacle beyond boxing. This is entertainment, geopolitics, marketing and mythology all in one.

The involvement of Turki Alalshikh, adviser to the Saudi crown prince and chairman of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority (GEA) is no accident: Saudi Arabia has been pumping money into global sporting events for years to transform its image. This battle of titans fits perfectly into that strategy.

The legacy

Whatever happens on Sept. 13, the consequences will be lasting. If Canelo wins, he may close with a triumphant crown. If Crawford prevails, he will definitely join the all-time greats and make history as one of the few who managed to dominate four weight classes.

This is no ordinary fight.

This is the superfight of a generation.
