Brazil's Supreme Court placed former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest on Aug. 4 after he repeatedly ignored restrictions imposed by Judge Alexandre de Moraes. The arrest follows a court order accusing Bolsonaro of involvement in a plot to invalidate the results of the 2022 presidential election and circumvent obstacles to justice.
Previously, De Moraes had imposed contact bans and a ban on political messages via social media to prevent Bolsonaro from inciting his supporters to protests or outside interference. The former president refused to comply, whereupon the judge decided on house arrest at his residence, where his phone has been confiscated and visits are allowed only for lawyers and court-authorized persons.
US President Donald Trump has condemned the case as a "witch hunt" and threatened to impose a 50% import tariff on Brazilian products, while the US recently imposed sanctions on Judge De Moraes for his role in the lawsuit. The developments highlight the tense relationship between judicial independence in Brazil and political pressure from the United States.
