Today, Washington D.C. was marked by a historic moment for Suriname: Albert Ramdin officially took the oath there as Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the period 2025-2030. In the atmospheric convention hall of the OAS headquarters, Ramdin former Deputy Secretary General and since 2020 Suriname's Minister of Foreign Affairs took over the torch from his Uruguayan predecessor. On behalf of Suriname, Ambassador Prof. Marten W. Schalkwijk witnessed the ceremony.
In his inaugural address, Ramdin called on member states to "unite and mobilize our collective capabilities to promote peace, security, democracy and sustainable development in our continent." But what specifically does his taking office mean for Suriname?
First, Ramdin's appointment strengthens Suriname's international position. For the first time in history, a countryman heads the world's oldest regional alliance. This leadership role offers Paramaribo a unique leverage to enter into strategic alliances with large countries such as the United States and Brazil, as well as smaller Caribbean and Latin American partners. At crucial forums on trade, security and environmental protection, Suriname can now have a stronger voice, thanks in part to the personal influence and network of a Secretary-General Ramdin.
In addition, new economic and development opportunities are opening up. Albert Ramdin maintains close ties with both the CARICOM countries and the Andean community, allowing him to support concrete projects that promote Suriname's growth potential. Under his leadership, these include improved market access for Surinamese exports, expanded infrastructure financing and knowledge exchange in the areas of sustainable agriculture and mining technologies. Such initiatives can create new investments and jobs, boosting Suriname's economy.
Finally, Ramdin's position gives Suriname more leverage in the implementation of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda within the hemisphere. The OAS coordinates numerous programs in poverty reduction, education improvement and climate adaptation, themes that are important to Suriname. With a compatriot at the helm, Paramaribo can participate directly in policy-making and in the allocation of funds for national projects. Consider strengthening coastal defenses against sea level rise or expanding education initiatives in remote inland villages.
The installation of Albert Ramdin as Secretary General of the OAS is not only a personal milestone, but above all a great opportunity for Suriname. With Ambassador Schalkwijk as a permanent link in Washington, the Surinamese voice continues to resonate clearly in the inter-American arena. While Ramdin works on regional stability, migration issues and support for fragile states, Suriname can hitch a ride on his course, further strengthening its own national security, prosperity and sustainable development.
