Suriname reaps benefits of economic recovery

Suriname has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past five years, with concrete results that reflect sustainable prosperity. Whereas government debt still rose to 121% of GDP in 2020, that ratio has now been reduced to 84% in May 2025. This reduction strengthens the state's financial position and reduces pressure on future budgets.

Inflation has also now fallen to around 6% thanks to consistent monetary policy and targeted price measures. This calm in prices benefits household purchasing power and encourages responsible consumer behavior. Meanwhile, the economy grew back from -16% in 2020; in 2023, Suriname posted over 2.5% of growth and a windfall of over 3% is expected in 2025, driven by the oil sector, resurgent mining and a rising domestic spending drive.

The build-up of international reserves shows the confidence both domestic and foreign parties are placing in Suriname. From $585 mln in 2020, foreign exchange buffers climbed to a whopping $1,634 mln in May 2025, good for more than seven months of import coverage well above the internationally recommended three months. The capital ratio of the Central Bank of Suriname also increased from 52% to nearly 99%, while the solvency ratio of commercial banks jumped from 11% to 23.4% providing solid room for lending and investment in the real economy.

We can speak of macro economic growth because the combination of debt reduction, price stability and reserves gives us the room to make long-term investments in infrastructure, energy and social programs. In this way, we create jobs, stimulate local businesses and lay the foundation for inclusive growth. With these figures, Suriname now focuses on further diversifying the economy so that the positive trend translates into broader prosperity with more innovation.
