Rags to Riches - Episode 5: Fatoumata Ba From humble beginnings in Senegal to Africa's tech pioneer

Every Sunday, we share the story of someone who started with little, but ended up big. Today: Fatoumata Ba, a Senegalese entrepreneur who transformed Africa's digital market with courage and vision. Her journey from a simple childhood in Dakar to founding a technology empire shows that with smart ideas and perseverance, you can transform the world.

A simple childhood in Dakar
Fatoumata Ba was born in 1986 in Dakar, the bustling capital of Senegal, West Africa. Her family had little money, and luxuries were rare. Yet Fatoumata was curious and determined. She excelled in school, read many books and dreamed of a future where she could achieve something great.
Fatoumata Ba studied business administration at the Toulouse Business School (École Supérieure de Commerce de Toulouse) in France, where she earned a master's degree in management. She also attended an executive program at INSEAD, a top business school, to deepen her knowledge in technology and entrepreneurship. She saw how the Internet connected the world and noticed that Africa was lagging behind: few people had access to online shopping or modern technology. Fatoumata decided to return to Africa to change that, with a dream of making technology accessible to all.
"A problem is an opportunity to build something." - Fatoumata Ba

The breakthrough: opening Africa's online marketplace
In 2012, at age 27, Fatoumata helped found Jumia, an online shopping platform often compared to Amazon. Jumia started in Nigeria and grew to countries such as Senegal, Ghana, Kenya and Morocco. The idea was powerful: people could buy clothes, phones or even refrigerators online, even in areas without large stores. This was a big challenge because in Africa few people had the Internet, and many did not trust online payments.
Fatoumata and her team worked out of a small office in Lagos, Nigeria. They convinced customers, built delivery networks and learned what people wanted. Her approach caught on: Jumia grew rapidly and in 2019 became Africa's first techunicorn, a technology company valued at more than $1 billion, lt when it sold shares on the New York Stock Exchange, the largest exchange in New York. In 2018, Fatoumata also founded Janngo Capital, a company that supports young African entrepreneurs with money and advice, especially women who have few opportunities. Today, Jumia reaches millions of clients and employs thousands of people. Fatoumata's wealth is estimated at tens of millions of dollars, a rare success for an African woman in technology.

Her mindset: turning obstacles into opportunities
Fatoumata's strength lay in her ability to see problems as opportunities. When people said Africans wouldn't store online, she proved them wrong by listening to customers and coming up with smart solutions. She worked long hours, learned from failures and kept going even when investors had doubts. Her perseverance was second to none: when an early deal almost failed, she found new ways to move forward.
She also believed in sharing success. With Janngo Capital, she supports young entrepreneurs, especially women, to start their own businesses. Her vision was not just wealth, but a world where technology gives everyone opportunities. Her approach, starting with a small idea and making it big, inspires people around the world.
"Technology can connect everyone, no matter where you come from."

Her impact: starting a digital revolution
Jumia changed how millions of Africans store, from cities to remote villages. The platform gave work to thousands of people, from programmers to delivery drivers, and made life easier for families who previously had to travel hours for items. Janngo Capital supports young companies in technology, healthcare and commerce, helping African entrepreneurs compete globally.
Fatoumata also gives back. She supports programs for education and women, such as scholarships for girls in Senegal and training for young entrepreneurs. Her work not only builds businesses, but also hope for a new generation by showing that success is possible, no matter what your background.

Why she is less well known
Fatoumata Ba is not a global celebrity like Silicon Valley tech giants. She works behind the scenes, building businesses and helping others in Africa, a continent often overlooked in world news. Her focus on results rather than fame makes her a quiet force, but her impact in technology and commerce is huge.

What we learn from her
See opportunities where others see obstacles.
Fatoumata Ba started with little, but built a technology empire by dreaming and doing. Her story shows that with courage, smarts and a heart for others, you can change the world. What is your next step in seizing an opportunity, for yourself or your community?
