Suriname reaffirmed its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2025 in New York. Led by Elizabeth Bradley of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation (BIS), the delegation presented concrete progress initiatives in the areas of public health, gender equality, labor market and maritime protection.
In the health sector, Suriname highlighted the strengthening of primary care services, the continued development of digital patient tracking systems and ambitious measures to eradicate malaria once and for all. At the same time, the implementation of anti-discrimination legislation was explained, with a specific focus on closing wage gaps and promoting female leadership in both public and private sectors.
On the economic front, Paramaribo is investing in sustainable employment for youth, women and Indigenous peoples, with the transition to a green and digital economy at its core. Integral strategies were also explained in the area of ocean and coastal management, ranging from coastal flood reinforcement to responsible offshore fisheries development.
Together with Caricom and other Small Island Developing States, Suriname advocated for more transparency in international funding mechanisms and clear measurable targets for vulnerable countries. Bradley also participated in a UN panel on disaster risk reduction. July 22 will see the presentation of Suriname's second Voluntary National Assessment, which will further outline achievements and future ambitions.
