The Suriname soccer team made history Friday night by winning 1-0 over Puerto Rico at the André Kamperveen Stadium. With this victory, Natio remains undefeated in World Cup qualification and is on course for placement in the third and final round of the CONCACAF zone.
The winning hit
The only goal of the match came from Jaden Montnor, who headed in the 79th minute after a perfect cross from Denzel Jubitana. The attack began with a build-up from midfield, after which Jubitana outplayed his direct opponent on the right flank and delivered a flawless ball to Montnor's head. The young striker from Belgium's Lommel SK once again proved his worth for the national team.
"I'm proud that I could do this for Suriname," Montnor said afterwards. "This is just the beginning - we want to go to the World Cup, and we believe in it."
Position and perspective
After two games in the second round of World Cup qualification, Suriname is at the top of Group F with 6 points from 2 games, followed by Puerto Rico (4 points). This victory means Natio has the initiative completely in its own hands.

What follows: El Salvador and the Gold Cup
Natio's next World Cup qualifier is on Tuesday, June 10, against El Salvador - a crucial away game that will largely determine whether Suriname qualifies for the third round of the qualifiers. With a draw or win, placement is almost certain.
After that, a new challenge already awaits: participation in the Concacaf Gold Cup 2025. Suriname is assigned to Group A with strong opponents such as Mexico, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. The first group match will be played on June 15 against Costa Rica.
More than soccer: hope and national pride
The victory over Puerto Rico is not only a sporting achievement, but also a moment of national unity. Natio's success provides a welcome source of hope and pride. The team, made up in part of diaspora players, shows that Suriname can compete internationally - provided there is vision, discipline and belief.
Afterwards, national coach Stanley Menzo praised the team spirit: "We have worked hard on our structure and it is starting to pay off now. The boys believe in it, the country believes in it."
The road to the World Cup is still long, but with this victory Natio shows that it is ready to compete at the region's highest level. The next few weeks will be crucial, both for World Cup qualification and for a worthy performance at the Gold Cup.
