What no one talks about is the dark side of the official statements, as there unfolds a sophisticated electronic warfare, tactical and targeted penetration attacks that are at the heart of the U.S.-Israeli operation against Iran. Even before the B-2 Spirit stealth bombers took off, a special deployment team of EC-130H Compass Call aircraft and cyber units had deliberately confused the Iranian air defense (IAD). By conducting simultaneous radar jamming and data link spoofing, the US created false incursions of nonexistent drone formations, causing Iranian operators to direct their Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) systems to the wrong coordinates.
At the same time, F-16s and F-35s conducted so-called "probe strikes" on peripheral targets right outside the real nuclear sites of Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. This tactic of mimetic misdirection directed air defense units away from the vital installations, after which Advanced Penetrator bombs thundered the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator silently through the concrete armor ceilings. Thanks to a reinforced sleeve of hardened chromium steel, the MOPs penetrated deep into the cryogenic bunkers without overhead detonations that would raise early alarms.
The timing of the operation was impeccably aligned with the internal routine of Iran's nuclear staff. Intelligence analysts had been tracking maintenance schedules and shift rotations at Natanz for months. The Sunday afternoon attack coincided with a scheduled maintenance phase in which many technical personnel worked in outside workshops. This minimized personnel losses while limiting the political impact for Tehran, allowing the U.S. and Israel a subtle, controlled escalation.
Supporting the bombers, Israeli Dolphin-class submarines patrolled undetected in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. Ready to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles in the event of an Iranian counterattack, these SSNs acted as a "floating second layer" deterrent to commercial and military shipping. This maritime component of the operation referred to as the "maritime interdiction posture" reinforced the strategic mandate without having to formally go public.
In the aftermath of the strikes, independent satellite imagery reported limited damage at Fordow and Natanz, while the IAEA did not observe any anomalous radiation spikes. All this points to an operation in which Electronic Warfare Operations (EWO), SEAD and Offensive Counter Air (OCA) elements combined with hyper-precision munitions. While the world watched mostly B-2s and Tomahawks, the sophisticated interplay of decoy flights, advanced penetrators and submarines remained the mission's best-kept secret.
