Avigdor Cyber Security Suriname Guards, Protect Against Advanced Trojans

Research by Cyble Research and Intelligence Labs (CRIL) has uncovered a sophisticated Android banking trojan that masquerades as official apps from government agencies and banks in Vietnam. Under the name RedHook, this malware infiltrates devices via phishing websites that are exact replicas of State Bank of Vietnam and Sacombank, among others. Avigdor Suriname warns society of the serious consequences of this type of attack and provides concrete advice to prevent damage.

RedHook operates through a persistent WebSocket channel with command-and-control servers, allowing malicious actors to execute real-time commands. These include reading contacts and text messages, taking screenshots, and even automatically controlling the screen to perform fraudulent transactions. In just a few months, more than 500 devices have already been infected, according to CRIL.

"Although RedHook is currently active in Southeast Asia, this finding underscores the global trend of increasingly sophisticated mobile malware," said cybersecurity expert. "Even in Suriname, we may increasingly encounter trojans posing as trusted apps, this may be because we are increasingly in the international spotlight with our oil and 93% green forest. People need to be aware that an innocent download can have disastrous consequences."

Avigdor Suriname recommends installing only apps from the official Google Play Store and regular updates to both apps and the operating system. When installing, always check the permissions requested; apps that want access to text messages, contacts or accessibility features deserve extra attention. Enable two-step verification whenever possible and use a mobile security program that blocks suspicious activity in real time

RedHook also highlights the evolution from traditional phishing to a combination of keylogging, remote access and screen overlays. For example, users see a fake window asking for identity documents and bank information. Then the trojan continuously streams the screen as JPEG images to the hackers. "These are techniques we haven't seen on this scale before," explains Avigdor out. "The ability to simulate interactions makes RedHook particularly dangerous."

Although detection on platforms such as VirusTotal remains low, proactive threat intelligence from dark-web monitoring, among others, provides a good first line of defense. "Stay on top of recent malware campaigns and share suspicious messages directly with your IT administrator," advises Avigdor Suriname Cyber Security . "Together we can strengthen the digital resilience of Surinamese society."

With the emergence of RedHook, it is clear that mobile security is no longer a prerequisite, but a core responsibility for every smartphone user. Avigdor Cyber Security Suriname continues to closely monitor developments and stands ready to support companies and individuals in prevention, training and incident response.
