As part of the Secondary Technical Education Support (STES) project, modern ICT classrooms were inaugurated today at three educational institutions. The rooms, housed at IMEAO 5, the General Secondary School (AMS) and the Suriname Pedagogical Institute (SPI), were officially opened by Minister of Education, Science and Culture Prof. Dr. Henry Ori.
The STES program, funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), aims to strengthen the quality and accessibility of secondary technical education in Suriname. By setting up well-equipped ICT facilities, the government aims to both teach digital skills and modernize educational processes.
During the opening ceremony, Minister Ori emphasized the dual importance of "learning about ICT and learning with ICT." He indicated that the new classrooms serve not only for computer literacy, but also as a basis for developing digital learning materials. Especially within the SPI, teachers can now develop blended-learning modules that allow students to participate in educational activities remotely.
Minister Ori expects the improved facilities to boost the attractiveness of technical and pedagogical education. "An up-to-date curriculum with digital learning tools can increase enrollment and help reduce the shortage of well-trained teachers," Ori said.
With the completion of these three ICT classrooms, the ministry is taking another step in its national strategy to make technological innovation and educational quality go hand in hand.
