Politics as love in action, when care trumps power play

Politics is more than power play and party interest; it is the concrete exercise in concern for fellow human beings and the common good, politics can be the highest form of charity. It is credible only when it rises above mere theory and becomes visible in action and when laws and policies truly help to ensure that people in vulnerable positions are heard, protected and supported. The illegitimate disparity between extreme wealth and increasing poverty threatens to split societies and may eventually lead to social unrest, violence or even armed conflict. Through fairer tax systems, equitable redistribution of resources and targeted investments in education, security, medical and financial sectors, political leadership can promote harmony and stability, both in Suriname and beyond.

At the same time, religious freedom within an open political framework provides a valuable foundation for dialogues that unite communities. When laws and regulations create space for authentic exchange between different faith traditions, respect for the positive values that religion can provide: solidarity, ethics and the drive for common good. The transition from self-centered self-love to a love grounded in something that transcends us, what St. Augustine called "amor Dei" constitutes a powerful catalyst for social policies that enable people to work together for a just society.

To maintain a stable moral compass in our modern, pluralistic world, it is necessary to connect to a framework that transcends all population groups. Natural law, already described by Cicero as an immutable and universal law urging man to do good and resist evil tendencies, provides guidance for this. Because this law cannot be changed by political majorities and is recognizable in every culture, it provides a solid basis for decision-making around current ethical dilemmas from bioethics and privacy issues to the protection of minorities and migrants.

In the face of the meteoric rise of artificial intelligence, human dignity is at stake. AI systems can process vast amounts of data and seemingly provide quick answers, but remain trapped in a "static memory" without the creative, generative power of the human mind. Political responsibility therefore means seeing AI not as the ruler, but as a tool at the service of human development. Only with strict regulation, transparent algorithms and educational policies that promote critical thinking will we guarantee that technology supports society rather than erodes it. As I describe in the book Impulse Measurement: we are in danger of having a generation of docile kids if AI is not properly regulated.

Sir Thomas More embodied this vision when in the sixteenth century he regarded his political office not as a career but as a vocation. He stood firm for social justice, protected the weak, defended the family and strove for the integral education of young people, even under the hand of the highest power he did not abandon his principles. His example sharpens our own vocation: politics is not the pursuit of power, but the mission to elevate truth, goodness and humanity. Let us dare to embrace that mission so that our policies do not merely regulate, but truly connect and enrich.
