Las Vegas The UFC returns to the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during International Fight Week with UFC 317, an event that promises to be one of the most memorable editions of the year. The main event will feature Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira battling for the vacant lightweight title. Both fighters represent not only different generations within the UFC, but also diverse styles, approaches and careers.
Topuria, unbeaten in 16 professional MMA fights, is making the move from the featherweight to the lightweight class in an attempt to capture his second world title. With dominant victories against Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski, among others, he established himself as one of the most explosive talents of recent years. The Georgian-Spanish fighter faces the chance to join the ranks of elite fighters who became champions in multiple weight classes.
His opponent, Charles Oliveira, is a veteran with a record of 35 wins, 10 defeats and one no-contest. The Brazilian was previously champion in the lightweight division and is eager to reclaim his title. Oliveira, known for his unparalleled submission game and surprisingly efficient striking, announced he would go "all-in" and publicly warned Topuria to count on a knockout.
The main event came about after Islam Makhachev gave up his lightweight title to focus entirely on the welterweight division. This will free up space at the top of the division, and UFC 317 will be the stage where the new champion will be determined.
The co-main event also adds significantly to the prestige of the event. Alexandre Pantoja defends his flyweight title against Kai Kara-France, in a rematch nearly a decade in the making. The two faced each other back in 2016 during The Ultimate Fighter. Since then, Pantoja grew into a dominant champion with three consecutive title defenses. Kara-France, from New Zealand, now faces his first chance at UFC gold.
Also, among others, Paulo Costa faces Roman Kopylov at middleweight, while Beneil Dariush takes on Renato Moicano in an important showdown within the lightweight division. Also, Jhonata Diniz versus Justin Tafa at heavyweight and a fight between women's flyweights Viviane Araujo and Tracy Cortez adorn the main card. In addition, the undercard features interesting encounters, such as Brandon Royval versus Manel Kape and Jack Hermansson versus Gregory Rodrigues.
UFC 317 will be the sporting highlight of International Fight Week 2025, which also includes the UFC Hall of Fame inductions and fan convention UFC X. The organization intentionally chose a date in late June, in part to avoid the annual U.S. Fourth of July celebrations and focus all of its attention on the fight spectacle.
The event can be seen live on ESPN+ PPV starting at 10 p.m. ET (11 p.m. in Suriname) For the UFC, the stakes are high: declaring a new champion, consolidating Topuria's status as a potential superstar, and a possible second coronation for Oliveira, the man with the most number of submissions in the organization's history.
UFC 317 is no average event. It is a battle of generations, styles and ambitions. And in the ring, the contours of the lightweight division's future will unfold irrevocably.
