In a far-reaching letter to DNA Chairman Ashwin Adhin, the VHP group has strongly objected to the repeated convening of urgent sessions, consistently ignoring the established waiting period in the Rules of Procedure. According to the applicable rules, at least a 24-hour period must elapse between the time of convening and the start of a meeting, but the group notes that this essential time limit is systematically overlooked.
Party leader Asis Gajadien states that the most recent emergency meeting intended to appoint new members was scheduled within a time frame of less than 24 hours. He emphasizes that the legislature is the first to set an example and therefore must act strictly according to its own procedures. Structural disregard of these regulations not only damages the credibility of parliament, but also undermines the transparency of the democratic process.
Gajadien points out that the Rules of Procedure are the fundamental pillar for orderly and open functioning within The National Assembly. By failing to comply with these provisions, trust in the institutions of DNA is put at risk and the people feel the foundation of parliamentary democracy sinking under their feet.
The VHP Group therefore urges the president to review his policy and henceforth guarantee that every convocation is sent at least 24 hours in advance. "Only through unconditional compliance with the Rules of Procedure can we collectively build a stronger parliamentary democracy and regain confidence in our legislative body," Gajadien said.
