In an unprecedented capital operation, Bitcoin specialist Strategy formerly known as MicroStrategy recently issued more than 28 million new shares via the Nasdaq. With proceeds of approximately 2.2 billion euros, this is undoubtedly the largest US equity issue of 2025. Shortly after the transactions were completed, the entire net profit flowed directly into the purchase of 21,021 Bitcoins, bringing the net payment to an average of $117,256 per coin.
Thanks to this move, Strategy's total Bitcoin holdings come to 628,791 coins, at an average purchase price of about $73,290. With a market capitalization of some $74 billion, Strategy ranks gloriously among the largest institutional holders worldwide. By comparison, the number two on the ranking holds less than a tenth of this volume.
The sizeable capital injection into bitcoin follows a period of pronounced price stability, with the crypto currency fluctuating between $117,000 and $120,000 in recent weeks. With the increasing involvement of publicly traded companies, bitcoin appears to be slowly evolving into an investment vehicle with less extreme price explosions, which may dampen volatility.
For investors in Suriname, Strategy's recent action offers a signal about the maturing of bitcoin as an asset class. Due to large institutional parties, more and more private investors at home and abroad no longer see cryptocurrency as mere speculation, but as a potential hedge against inflation and currency risks
Still, there are caveats. Strategy's average buyback price is well above the current price, a risk that even smaller-scale investors must weigh. Moreover, international regulations increasingly play a role, as restrictions on trading, tax levies and compliance requirements can play out differently in Suriname than in the United States or Europe.
Surinamese investors considering investing part of their portfolio in bitcoin would therefore be wise to first understand the local tax treatment and technical requirements of secure storage. At the same time, Strategy's model offers inspiration; those with sufficient capital and risk assets can participate in the growth of this digital asset class through structured investment vehicles or specialized funds.
All in all, this mega-transaction not only marks a milestone for Strategy itself, but also highlights the expansion of crypto-adoption towards established financial circles. For the Surinamese market, this could open the door to new forms of diversification and asset protection, provided investors are properly educated and keenly assess their risk appetite.
