On July 30, 2025, Ethereum will reach a milestone, exactly ten years since the network's Genesis block was struck. Leading up to this festive anniversary, Ethereum enthusiasts are launching a unique on-chain time capsule designed to preserve the platform's culture and values for future generations.
The initiators, led by Jérôme de Tychey (director of Ethereum France and founder of EthCC), describe the project as "a tribute to the history of Ethereum and a lasting anchoring of its ideals." Through a smart contract, participants can capture digital artifacts, messages or predictions on the blockchain from July 30, 2025 for a small fee of $2.50 in ETH. Once the smart contract is closed, the content will remain inaccessible for one year.
Blockchain developer Shutter Network is handling the storage and technical handling of the documents. On July 30, 2026, when Ethereum celebrates its 11th anniversary, the capsule will be automatically unlocked. After that, all contributions will be permanently and publicly viewable by anyone with access to the Ethereum ledger.
The idea originated at the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Cannes and is receiving financial support from Protocol Guild, an organization that raises funds for research and development within the Ethereum ecosystem. All proceeds flow back into the development of the platform's core protocols.
With this on-chain archive operation, the Ethereum community aims not only to celebrate its technical achievements, but also to anchor its collective vision in a decentralized and immutable registry. Just as a physical time capsule is left behind for future excavation, this blockchain variant provides a lasting time imprint of the innovations and ideals that shaped the platform over the past decade.
