With 17 seats counted so far for the VHP and 18 for the NDP, political power is closely divided. Before the elections, criticism was already sounding from the NDP corner about alleged fraud, while independent electoral offices have since reported numerical and administrative inaccuracies in Nickerie and Wanica, among others. The VHP is therefore pushing for recounts to ensure that every vote is processed correctly and insightfully. The question does arise: "Has chasing seats become more important than looking for the truth behind the numbers?"
Meanwhile, the NDP, NPS, Pertjajah Luhur, BEP and A20 together accounting for 28 seats according to preliminary results signed an agreement in principle tonight at 6:30 p.m. at D-Venue on the South Ring Road. Pertjajah Luhur chairman Paul Somohardjo called on his supporters to attend in party attire and with flags. At Ko'W' Checking, we note that none of the parties are talking about the content of their policies; the negotiations seem to be mostly about delineating seats and portfolios. Is society being sidelined again, and is there already particracy?
Simultaneously, at a meeting on Monday, May 26, the NDP officially nominated party chair Jennifer Geerlings-Simons as its presidential candidate. "Simons has our unconditional support," stated party spokesman Ricardo Panka. "Her leadership is essential to secure the necessary two-thirds majority in The National Assembly and set the direction of the country."
The VHP continues to engage intensively with all political groups. The goal? To form an administration that does justice to the real mood of the people, without being guided by pure power politics, because the democratic mandate must prevail over political opportunism. In the coming days, recounts will show whether the provisional distribution of seats holds up. Then awaits the crucial vote in the United People's Assembly (VVV).
With neither harmony nor substantive policy discussions on the table, only one question remains: will the truth of votes finally come to the fore again?
