Focus on your customer!

Managers who mirror competitors are by definition behind the times because they wait for someone else to move and only then react, whereas companies that start with the customer and reason back from that demand innovate faster and more often create value that does not fit into existing equations. Research on market orientation has shown for decades that organizations that systematically collect market information, share it internally, and act on it in a coordinated way outperform rivals that look primarily at each other's prices and features, precisely because they continually steer from the outside in, bringing profitability and growth closer.

The difference between competitive-oriented and customer-oriented thinking becomes tangible when you project decision-making onto daily routines. The competitive-focused manager optimizes against today's benchmark and waits for the neighbor's next move; the customer-focused manager looks for the bar in users' problems and then raises that bar himself with solutions that surprise the rest. AgapeUnit articulates this as starting with the customer first and then working back to the product, a principle embedded in the way teams choose priorities and scale up experiments.

Those who really want to lead the way go one step further and not only look at expressed needs but try to make latent value visible. AgapeUnit calls this value creation and shows that sustainable growth occurs when you simultaneously pursue higher customer value and lower costs, opening a playing field where competitors become less relevant precisely because you have shifted the rules of the game.

This requires a healthy skepticism toward the comfort zone of focus groups because people often articulate what they know and not what they will need tomorrow. Steve Jobs summed this up sharply with the observation that customers don't know until you show them, an attitude that is not a disdain for input but rather a plea for product vision that brings together usage data, fieldwork and craftsmanship into something not yet on the page.

In Suriname, we must apply this strategy within our lines of communication because our market is small and competitors often have the same suppliers, distribution and pricing pressures. Those who keep squealing to competitors end up with the same margins and the same vulnerability. Those who place the compass with the customer can start small and still become distinctive, for example, by embedding three disciplines that recur in the literature. One, retrieving information where the friction really is, from receipt to call center and from WhatsApp to field visit, not as a project but as a rhythm. Two, share those insights across departments so that sales, service and product development act on the same signals and don't stay in islands. Three, short-cycle experimentation with propositions that simultaneously increase value and reduce costs, from simpler bundles to faster after-sales and smarter logistics, precisely the logic behind value innovation.

Specifically in our context, this means that a butcher or juice producer in Paramaribo does not merely look at competitive offers but simplifies the ordering process and makes delivery times transparent so that waiting days disappear from the chain. And that an agricultural cooperative in Coronie doesn't just track the export price of coconuts but designs the entire chain and return logistics so that waste shrinks and volumes become more reliable, and that a fintech offering payment solutions doesn't wait for a foreign player to introduce a new fee but first measures merchants' checkout flows and then builds a rate and service package that relieves peak hours and prevents chargebacks. The pattern is always the same, compare less to the neighbor and design more around the customer's work, because the fastest way to stay ahead of the competition is to create solutions that the competitor does not yet have an answer for.
