Surinamese politics at a glance check

Economically and institutionally, EZ is moving into the region. Minister Baasaron visited the branch offices in Commewijne and Marowijne (Moengo, Albina) to shorten lines of communication, digitize processes, strengthen teams and streamline internal communications. Albina is thereby explicitly positioned as a border hub with real economic potential. The message: organize decentrally better to perform more nationally.

At the same time, the security base is being worked on. JusPol commissioned the KPS to develop a short-term plan through December 2025, focusing on three risk peaks (50 years of independence, December celebrations, major vacations) and three priorities: fewer fatal traffic accidents and traffic crime, addressing noise pollution, and reducing robberies and thefts. The package also includes fire and water safety following recent tragedies. Daily assessments, targeted patrols and targeted education should have a noticeable effect but only if citizens become co-owners of safety.

Citizen Power completes the picture. The Red Cross recruited 24 new blood donors from Justice & Police and is rolling out the initiative to other ministries. This not only helps the structurally tight blood supply for operations and emergencies, it also promotes donor health, according to research, because this act has a great social return.

In healthcare, Public Health is shifting the RGD toward firmer management. The executive team outlined the staffing, patient profile and financial clamp, including the impact of brain drain. Looking ahead: quality improvement and gradual reduction of dependence on ministry, underpinned by clear SWOT and tight financial policies.

The crux of the new spending framework is undisguised, of the projected SRD 67.17 billion for 2025, personnel spending gobbles up more than a quarter (SRD 16.74 billion), with Education, Science & Culture the biggest gobbler (about SRD 3.88 billion). Non-personnel expenses add up to SRD 50.43 billion. Without parliamentary approval of the adjusted budget, payment of civil servants' salaries is likely to come to a halt in August and the deficit, partly due to higher wage costs, will rise to SRD 11.5 billion.

The long line remains energy. Forty years after Staatsolie took the first step with Gulf Oil, Suriname is at the threshold of deepwater production under a production sharing contract. With decades of knowledge and oversight capacity, there is an opportunity here to firmly anchor national interests provided governance, contract supervision and public support remain up to par.
