While the BRICS countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are steadily expanding their influence on the world stage, the European Union shows a disturbing degree of internal divisions and policy shifts. Whereas the EU quickly released hundreds of billions of euros for coronal recovery and sustainable investment, it now faces another billion-dollar injection into defense, with no coherent long-term strategy. The once close relationship with the United States is crumbling, relations with China and Russia continue to deteriorate, and citizens are losing faith in the stability of the euro.
In my view, these policy choices demonstrate geopolitical amateurism, with left-wing and right-wing thinking rapidly alternating and strategic partnerships too often giving way to internal political quarrels. Meanwhile, the BRICS countries are preparing their own currencies, supported in part by gold reserves they have managed to accumulate since 2011, and strengthening their trade networks outside the Western economic system. By working together in a focused way and sticking to a clear direction, they are setting the rules of the game at the global level themselves.
Suriname can learn much from both the pitfalls of the EU and the targeted cooperation within the BRICS. Instead of falling into ad hoc measures with no long-term perspective, it is essential to set a clear course now that will ensure structural growth and stability. At the same time, both existing ties with traditional friends and new opportunities in the Southern Hemisphere must be nurtured so that Suriname does not remain dependent on any market or power bloc. Transparency on state spending and fiscal policy helps to build trust with both citizens and international investors. Just as the BRICS countries are betting on gold reserves and proprietary currency options, Suriname can strengthen its resilience by investing wisely in natural resources, local industries and digital infrastructure. Only by sticking to a consistent vision and broad international cooperation can Suriname take charge of its own future and guard against the vagaries of geopolitical shifts.
