The Caribbean Community (Caricom) is achieving concrete results in the fight for its own food supply. Figures from the Caricom Secretariat show that the region has significantly increased its agricultural output, tightened cooperation among member states and opened up new sources of funding for agribusiness.
"Our food strategy is undergoing a true metamorphosis, and we are now reaping the benefits of that," explained Shaun Baugh, Caricom's agriculture and agribusiness program manager. Commenting to the organization's Communications Unit, he emphasized that the region is on course to substantially reduce its dependence on imported food products-if the course it has embarked on continues unabated.
The upcoming 49th Regular Session of the Conference of Heads of Government (July 6-8, 2025, Montego Bay) is therefore dedicated to further rolling out and strengthening these food security measures. Baugh points out that the joint action plan from knowledge sharing and logistical alignment to innovative credit for small-scale farmers has been decisive. "By maintaining this momentum, we can truly realize our ambitions for a self-sufficient Caribbean agricultural sector."
