Amid trade nerves and technological rivalries, Beijing took a clear step this week by banning major Internet companies from testing or ordering Nvidia chips any longer, tilting the playing field in favor of proprietary semiconductor makers and removing the last widely available models of the U.S. market leader from Chinese data centers. The instruction came from the national cyberspace watchdog and targets, among other things, the model designed specifically for China, after which several buyers withdrew their orders and shut down test rigs.

The timing is part of a broader movement in which Chinese players are showing that in-house computing power is growing rapidly, with new facilities running entirely on domestic processors and with vendors indicating they are scaling up production of AI chips sharply. A major telecom company simultaneously opened a center in Qinghai that is already delivering thousands of petaflops and plans to scale up much further in a short time, with most of the chips coming from local providers and new deliveries on the way.

For the U.S. chip giant, this is a new twist after months of adjusting to export rules and developing stripped-down variants for the Chinese market, while top executive Jensen Huang previously argued that export restrictions were counterproductive because they accelerated the advance of Chinese alternatives and halved Nvidia's market share in China. That message underscores how policy and competition reinforce each other in a way that strains the margins of foreign suppliers in China.

The political layer is not left behind as Beijing also looks at Nvidia competitively while wanting more control over where and how data is processed, while the stock market reacted briefly with a tick down on reports that orders are being scrapped. On the other hand, confidence is growing in Beijing that homegrown chips perform adequately within the limits set by Washington, fueling the argument to move away from imports more quickly.

This is a clear pattern with China stepping up the pace of substitution, with international providers joining only when they comply with tighter data lines and licensing forms that shield intellectual property. For developers and investors, this means that the global AI chain is becoming less uniform and that software teams must more often optimize for multiple chip architectures with diverse libraries and drivers, while the price of computing power and availability vary by region. As a result, economies of scale are shifting toward markets where policy and supply are closer together than they have been in recent years.

Amid trade nerves and technological rivalries, Beijing took a clear step this week by banning large Internet companies from still...
[17,19
22,25
post-4276","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-actueel","category-technology","tag-kowchecking","tag-redesigningourmonetarysystem","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap
