In the wake of the hostage crisis, the Israeli government has further expanded its control over large parts of the Gaza Strip. The official explanation is that this intervention is necessary to search all possible hideouts of hostages, but insiders point to a broader strategic ambition: full annexation of the area in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last weekend, a letter from more than six hundred former U.S. security advisers caused a furor. This open letter urged the U.S. president to press for an early resolution of the hostage situation. Shortly thereafter, the Israeli government announced an accelerated ground operation in the Gaza Strip, seeming to want to get ahead of the international community. This accelerated deployment, according to those involved, is both a response to concerns about the release of hostages and to fears that diplomatic pressure from abroad will only increase in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, calls for recognition of a Palestinian state are growing in numerous Western capitals. After several leading EU countries, Canada, Malta and Portugal have now announced that they will consider formal recognition this spring, partly in response to the humanitarian crisis in the area. The Union is on edge as sanctions and diplomatic measures against Israel are increasingly serious on the agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Netherlands, this leads to renewed parliamentary debates on future foreign and sanctions policy. Fractions are forced to redefine their course: what pressure can and should our country exert, and to what extent do we join European initiatives to use recognition of the Palestinian state as leverage?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Analysts point out that these diplomatic moves seem paradoxical; while one hand fears a final takeover of Gaza, the other reaches out for a future Palestinian entity. For the Palestinian people, the prospect of a state of their own thus threatens to get further away, despite global support for their right to self-determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United Nations, traditionally the forum for such issues, has been virtually excluded from any influence since the Gaza operation. With an American veto in the background, the powerlessness of international institutions remains painfully visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts call for a \"coalition of the willing\" who can increase pressure through talks with influential actors outside the usual diplomatic channels, including direct consultations with Washington. To date, however, political will appears to be unabatedly divided, both within Israel itself and in the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As military operations continue and political tensions mount, the urgency for a coherent strategy grows.
