Deforestation, the large-scale destruction of natural forests to make way for agriculture, ranching, logging, infrastructure and mining, represents one of the pressing environmental problems of our time. Globally, an area the size of a soccer field of tropical rainforest is lost every five seconds, with more than 41,000 square kilometers of primary forests cut or burned in 2022 alone, a loss that exceeds the carbon emissions of the world's second most populous country, India, every year. The rate at which forests are disappearing is also alarming, averaging 28 million hectares a year since 2016, equivalent to a soccer field every second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet Suriname belongs to the rare group of \"High Forest cover, Low Deforestation\" (HFLD) countries, with more than 90 % of forest cover. Whereas the global average annual deforestation rate was over 0.4 % between 2000 and 2009, it was only 0.02 % in Suriname during that period. Although deforestation here has since risen slightly to an average of 0.07 % per year between 2000 and 2019, the loss remains relatively small compared to other tropical regions. However, this increase is worrisome, as from 0.02 % in 2000-2009 to about 0.1 % in 2014-2015 a fivefold increase in 15 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The driving force behind Suriname's deforestation is largely gold mining. When the international gold price peaked in 2012, tree cover loss in Suriname skyrocketed by 71 % from previous years. This demonstrates how strongly our forests resonate with global commodity markets and underscores the need for resilient policy mechanisms that can withstand such price shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
International examples show that nationwide programs can effectively reduce forest loss. In neighboring Guyana, the REDD+ partnership with Norway led to 35 % less deforestation between 2010 and 2015 than would have occurred in the absence of agreements, representing over 12.8 million tons of CO\u2082 not released into the atmosphere. This success was mainly due to stable funding for protected areas, transparent monitoring of forest changes, and strict enforcement in high-risk zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suriname can learn from these experiences by strengthening its own forest protection framework. First, it is important to intensify satellite-based monitoring and public reporting so that illegal logging is spotted more quickly. Second, timely entry into market mechanisms such as \"Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes\" (ITMOs) under the Climate Accord, through which the trading of reduced emissions can generate additional revenue for forest management, is recommended. In addition, regulations around mining and logging concessions need to be tightened, with clear permitting processes and higher penalties for violators. Equally crucial is the recognition of traditional use rights of indigenous and local communities: giving them a central role as stewards not only increases compliance but also directly benefits them from sustainable forest systems. Finally, spreading economic opportunities, including through ecotourism and agroforestry, will reduce the incentive to clear forests and contribute to a resilient Surinamese economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
