It is becoming increasingly clear how acute the housing crisis for young people in large cities has become in the Netherlands. The average purchase price of a home is now approaching 500,000 Euros in some parts of the city there is even talk of amounts in excess of 600000 Euros. Without financial support from their own parents, the majority of people in their twenties and thirties no longer qualify for owner-occupied housing. And the rental sector offers little relief, for a modest apartment in urban areas one quickly pays between 1500 and 2000 Euros per month. This unprecedented price pressure is prompting many young people to consider emigration, while at the same time, in other regions of the world, tens of thousands of young adults are coming to the Netherlands for a future that seems inaccessible to many of our own young people here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Against this backdrop a deeper social tension emerges, on the one hand the call for more affordable housing, on the other the question of how to restore a sense of community at a time when the individual is increasingly central. Educational housing, student flats and nursing residences once embedded in the healthcare and education landscape are now almost entirely absent. Institutions and governments no longer seem to feel responsible for creating a living environment around their vital professions. As a result, young people alienate rather than bond with their hometowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, a disturbing interweaving of conflicts is taking place in world affairs. While one day the tension in Eastern Europe dominates, the next day news follows of new geopolitical alliances and military coordination elsewhere. Countries outside the immediate skirmish superpowers, diplomatic capitals and consultancies appear to be exerting undeniable influence on small-scale regions through backroom deals and strategic plans. Local tensions, from ethnic groups to border disputes, become increasingly linked to power politics at the global level. At a time of increasing multipolarity, the international community is struggling to find new, shared frameworks for peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is also a credibility crisis within overarching institutions. Transparency and democratic accountability within supranational governments lag behind, even though they have far-reaching powers. Instead of representative control, lobbies and networking seem to weigh more and more heavily. At the same time, the call for renewed community thinking is growing within national borders; pleas for small scale, solidarity and the cherishing of local traditions are ringing louder than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A similar tension appears on the economic front. As interest rates remain low for long periods of time and mortgage deductions even lead to private wealth accumulation, calls are growing for tax reforms that create a fairer playing field. Discussions about taxing surplus value more heavily, limiting mortgage lending on purchases and redistributing gift limits are emerging. At the same time, state aid to vital industries from shipbuilding to energy supplies is being approved without much resistance, even as corruption cases and violations of sanctions sometimes run side by side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The combination of these trends the housing shortage, geopolitical interconnectedness, institutional distance, economic inequality and cultural alienation outlines a society and a world in transition. It is a phase where the question resonates at all levels-how do we restore trust in systems that seemingly no longer work, and how do we reconnect people to places and to each other? The coming months will reveal whether leadership and vision emerge that are stronger than the individual crises, or whether we fall further into fragmentation and mistrust. One thing is certain; the time for standing idly by is over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suriname can learn from Dutch issues, actively invest in social rental sectors and student housing, strengthen community-oriented housing projects and involve entrepreneurs in planning.
