The International Monetary Fund (IMF), under the new leadership of President-elect Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, intends to further intensify its already strong and longstanding cooperation with Suriname. In a congratulatory letter dated July 10, signed by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, the Fund congratulates Geerlings-Simons on her election and offers its government to continue to cooperate closely at the policy level, with financing and through knowledge transfer.

This statement appears amid Geerlings-Simons' cautious attitude toward international lenders. Although she confirmed that there are ongoing talks with the IMF, the president-elect stressed that this will not necessarily lead to a standard aid program like the one concluded under the previous Santokhi administration. "We will choose solutions that best fit the Surinamese reality," Geerlings-Simons said recently.

In her letter, Georgieva underlines that cooperation so far has helped restore macroeconomic stability in Suriname and created the conditions for inclusive growth. However, she points out that additional efforts are needed to establish a solid institutional framework for managing the recently discovered oil revenues. According to the IMF, targeted reforms are indispensable to absorb future price fluctuations in international markets and ensure long-term development.

Kristalina Georgieva concludes her message with an explicit endorsement of Geerlings-Simons' policy vision, which focuses on strengthening domestic institutions and opportunities for the younger generations. "The IMF stands ready to work with your team for a prosperous future for all Surinamese," she writes.

Whether the government will actually opt for a formal IMF program or an alternative funding route after the official inauguration on July 16 remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the IMF is following developments on Paramaribo's financial policy with great interest.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), under the new leadership of President-elect Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, wants to strengthen the already strong and...
[17,4,14

post-3197","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-actueel","category-binnenlands-nieuws","category-financial-nieuws","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap
