On July 16, 1945, a nuclear explosion was created artificially in the New Mexico desert at the Trinity test for the first time in history. Within a second, an energy release equivalent to about 20 kilotons of TNT was released. Three weeks later, the United States dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing more than 200,000 people. Thus began the geopolitical and scientific race for ever more powerful weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nine countries, more than 12,000 warheads<\/strong> Two types of nuclear bombs<\/strong> Non-Proliferation and the NPT<\/strong> Should armed conflict break out, Suriname faces a major problem because it imports almost all essential goods, including primary foodstuffs. With total imports of about $ 1.80 billion by 2023, its import dependency is particularly high, of which food products account for over 15.5 % of trade goods. It is therefore important that the Central Bank of Suriname carefully manage its international reserves in gold and foreign exchange to meet payment obligations. Today, nine states possess nuclear weapons: the US, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. Researchers estimate the total arsenal at more than 12,000 warheads. Nearly half of these (about 5,000) are constantly operational on demand, while the rest are in storage or are being phased out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The very first nuclear weapons were fission bombs, in which uranium or plutonium atoms explode and cause a chain reaction. Starting in the early 1950s, fusion reactors were added, which are technologies similar to energy production in the sun and helped increase explosive power exponentially to over megaton-class levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1953, President Eisenhower launched the effort to share nuclear technology for peaceful applications with his \"Atoms for Peace\" speech. This led to the creation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 1957. Partly out of fear of unlimited proliferation, the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) was concluded in 1968; all countries that had conducted a test before 1967 were allowed to keep their nuclear arsenals and others promised not to develop weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suriname can benefit from the lessons of its nuclear weapons history by focusing on science and transparency, just as the NPT member states had to report their arsenals, Suriname with its growing digital infrastructure can develop a reliable system for the transparent monitoring of critical technologies. International cooperation is certainly needed in this regard; by actively participating in regional security and nonproliferation linkages, Suriname can contribute to stability in the Caribbean. At the same time, knowledge of historical data (from 1945 to the present) and the immense destructive power of nuclear weapons underscores the importance of disaster preparedness and sound nuclear risk management within both government and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
