During the 16th edition of the International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) in Macao, the Minister of Public Works positioned Suriname as an attractive destination for international infrastructure investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at the CHINA-LAC Infrastructure Partnership Program, the minister underscored the urgent need to expand and modernize the national infrastructure. He invited foreign companies to actively participate in the numerous projects Suriname has in the pipeline.
\"Although Suriname already has essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges, ports and dikes, further development is crucial for sustainable growth and economic integration in the region,\" Nurmohamed said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regional integration through IIRSA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A central project highlighted was the completion of the IIRSA (Initiative for Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South America) route. This east-west main road of about 350 kilometers needs to be upgraded to become a full-fledged regional logistics corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Oil, gas and infrastructure as growth engines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Recent developments in the offshore oil and gas industry off the Surinamese coast bring new demands for supporting infrastructure. The minister highlighted the need for modern ports, improved roads and airports, housing and industrial facilities. Deepening rivers for better port infrastructure is also part of the plans, mostly through public-private partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Climate resilient investments as a priority<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Because of Suriname's vulnerable location on the Atlantic coast, Nurmohamed pointed to the increasing urgency of climate-adaptive infrastructure. BRI as an international platform<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n As an official member of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the minister emphasized the concrete opportunities for cooperation with Chinese and other international partners. Several projects in Suriname are already funded by the government, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank and other multilateral institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He called on engineering and construction companies worldwide to apply for international tenders. Roadmap to 2050<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The presentation closed with reference to the recently published Sustainable Infrastructure Development Plan Suriname 2050.
