With the signing of their grant agreements, dozens of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have entered a new phase within the Suriname Growth Enterprise program, SURGE for short. During an implementation workshop on June 5, organized in the conference room of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation (EZ), the entrepreneurs received practical guidance in rolling out their Sales Growth Plans. The session's content was enhanced by experts on Environmental & Social Standards (ESS) and procurement procedures, underscoring the emphasis on sustainable and socially responsible business development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SURGE is not just another grant program. It is a key component of the Suriname Competitiveness and Sector Diversification Project (SCSD), funded by the World Bank with a US$23 million loan. Implementation lies with the Competitiveness Unit Suriname, while Solidaridad provides technical support. The core of the program is to help promising businesses scale up their operations, not only through financial injections, but also through knowledge transfer and tailored guidance. There is a strong emphasis on businesses located in rural areas, including indigenous and maroon communities, and on women entrepreneurs who have historically had less access to growth capital.
A key principle within SURGE is the so-called \"buyer-led\" approach. This means that companies are not only encouraged to grow, but their growth plans must be in direct line with market demand. In other words, expansion must be commercially based. This market-oriented approach requires entrepreneurs to explicitly align their sales strategies with existing and potential buyers, an aspect that was the focus of the June 5 workshop. Among other things, participants learned how to design their sales funnels more effectively and how to integrate ESG guidelines into their operational growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the program's guidelines, participating companies must be operational for at least three years, generate annual sales between US$20,000 and US$1 million, and have a team of three to 50 employees. Those who are selected can count on a so-called matching grant, which, depending on the type of company and growth plan, ranges from US$5,000 to US$100,000, and in consortia even up to US$300,000. Crucial to this is that companies themselves provide a financial consideration of at least 20 to 30 percent, which should underscore their own commitment and risk appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the recent period, 41 companies successfully signed their grant agreement. In doing so, they have formally joined the program and started implementing their growth strategies. The broader SCSD project aims to support a total of some 230 SMEs through a combination of financial support and capacity building. Within this strategy, sector-specific clusters in agribusiness, tourism and service providers to the mining industry are also explicitly included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Linking economic growth with social responsibility is an explicit condition within SURGE. The project falls under the World Bank's 'Category B' classification, which means that there may be limited environmental and social impacts that are, however, manageable provided mitigation plans are developed and followed. Therefore, tools such as the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) and the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Planning Framework (ITPPF) are essential within program implementation. Part of the purpose of the recent workshop was to make these frameworks tangible to entrepreneurs so that they not only grow, but do so in a way that does justice to people, environment and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This makes the SURGE program a promising vehicle for economic diversification at a time when Suriname feels the need to become less dependent on natural resources. By focusing on concrete growth plans, market validation and social responsibility, it positions itself as a catalyst for sustainable entrepreneurial growth. The coming months will reveal the extent to which the entrepreneurs are able to turn this momentum into measurable results.
