In a relaxed atmosphere, Wednesday evening, June 4, the open training of the Suriname national team took place at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium. Fans got a chance to see their pride, Natio, up close ahead of the decisive World Cup qualifier against Puerto Rico on June 6. It became not just a sports session, but a powerful moment of national bonding and hope.

The SVB had called via social media for attendance at the training, and this was heeded en masse. Dozens of children, families and fans flocked to the training. Children carried flags, sang songs, and afterwards many were even allowed onto the field for photos and the team. For a moment, generations of Surinamese stood together on the grass, united by one goal: Kraka Natio baka.

The match on June 6 against Puerto Rico is not just any game; it is a key match in the second round of CONCACAF qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Suriname and Puerto Rico are in Group F, along with El Salvador, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines and Anguilla. After two matches, Suriname is on top with 6 points, but Puerto Rico follows closely behind with 4 points as well as a higher goal difference. A win for Suriname not only means an almost certain qualification for the third round, but also a statement in the region: Suriname is ready to compete on the world stage.
A defeat, on the other hand, would put enormous pressure on the remaining matches against El Salvador and Saint Vincent - and seriously threaten the World Cup dream.

The match also carries a psychological charge. In June 2023, Suriname lost to Puerto Rico via penalty shootout in an earlier encounter - a painful elimination that is still fresh in the memory. For many players, June 6 feels like a moment of sporting revenge as well as rehabilitation.
