Let's face it: Suriname has a corruption problem. From fake tenders to nepotism and bribes - the stories are well known. But we talk about it more often than we do anything about it structurally. And yet it is possible. Not easily. Not quickly. But definitely possible. At the various debates all politicians talk about how they will solve this chronic problem in our country. The stories are all nice, but when real action is needed we see that the political will is actually lacking. It seems like people are saying, \"corruption is wrong!.... as long as I am not involved, in that case it is ok\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is time to follow the example of countries that were very corrupt and have now moved in a completely different direction and then actually prosper. Corruption is the biggest obstacle to sustainable development and equitable wealth distribution. Let's look at how the following countries have done it.
Let's look at Rwanda. After a 1994 genocide in which the state apparatus completely collapsed, the country managed to rise to become one of the least corrupt nations in Africa. How? Through a tough political line, digital public services and a culture of transparency. Their Office of the Ombudsman investigates corruption cases and reports directly to parliament. Local leaders sign performance contracts - and are judged accordingly
Or take Jamaica. There, the Integrity Commission was established in 2017: an independent institution with teeth. It investigates, publishes reports, and protects whistleblowers by law. The commission operates completely outside the political sphere of influence, demonstrating through public reports that no one is above the law.
And Singapore? Which paid its officials decently, coupled that with sky-high integrity requirements, and set up an ironclad anti-corruption agency directly under the prime minister. The result: an efficient, modern country with strong institutions and a low level of corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What do these countries have in common? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n They chose not cosmetic solutions, but structural reform. They built institutions that work. They wrote laws that were obeyed. They had leaders who led by example themselves. We need to build a culture where honesty pays off. In which children learn in school that corruption is not a survival strategy. And that's exactly where the pinch is in Suriname.
We have laws, but do not enforce them. We have institutions, but no resources or power. We talk about integrity, but protect cronies. We deliberately pursue policies - but often to benefit the wrong people.
Still, there are concrete steps Suriname can take:
1. Establish an independent integrity commission, with budget, mandate and transparency obligation.
2. Introduce a whistleblower law that protects rather than marginalizes reporters.
3. Digitize government services and procurement, eliminating paper intermediaries and bribes.
4. Pay officials at market rates, but set a code of conduct and annual evaluation in return.
5. Make political assets public, from ministers to boards of state-owned enterprises.
The path to a corruption-free Suriname does exist. But it is a difficult route. Because it means breaking with old habits. With loyalty to party and family over the common good. With looking away and remaining silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suriname deserves a better system. But the system will not change by itself. It takes courage - from politicians, civil servants and citizens. We do not need to reinvent the wheel. The examples are there. The question is: do we really want to?
