Data analysis and strict control mechanisms of the OKB

A reliable and transparent election requires a foundation of hard data and unadulterated facts. When voters, political parties and observers can rely on objective information from accurate voter lists to undisputed outcome figures, trust in the democratic process increases significantly. Data- and fact-driven elections not only reduce the risk of manipulation and fraud, but also allow differences between regions and demographic groups to be understood, allowing policymakers to better target the real needs of the population.

In Brazil, the system of Direct Recording Electronic voting computers (DRE machines) was introduced in 1996 to replace traditional paper voting procedures. These machines combine identification, voting and counting in a secure process, with software audited in advance by political parties and the Supreme Court. This setup virtually eliminated manipulation at the local level during the transportation of ballots and allowed results to be announced within hours of the polling stations closing .

Estonia has been at the forefront of Internet voting since 2005. In the March 2023 parliamentary elections, for the first time more than half of voters cast their vote online, a total of 312,181 votes, or 51.1 % of votes . This i-voting system allows voters to verify their vote and, if desired, cast it again within the voting period. The digital approach also produced a slight increase in overall turnout, from 63.7 % in 2019 to 63.5 % in 2023.

Technological innovation has also made for a cleaner voter register in Kenya. After the violent aftermath of the 2007 elections, the Electoral Commission introduced biometric registration kiosks in 2013 to prevent duplicate registrations. Prior to that election, more than 20,000 duplicate registrations were detected and removed, effectively ensuring "one person, one vote." Fingerprint checks take place on election day and results forms are immediately photographed and transmitted digitally, virtually eliminating manual entry errors .

In Suriname, the Independent Electoral Bureau (OKB) guarantees that the electoral process is based on data and facts and is completely secure. Since its establishment in 1987, the OKB, as a non-partisan regulator, has been watching over fair, free and secret elections. The agency employs strict monitoring mechanisms, including periodic review and updating of voter lists, the swearing-in and training of independent monitors, and frequent reports to the Ministry of Interior. Just recently, the OKB launched a revamped website with an interactive dashboard that transparently publishes voter registration data, election procedures and audit reports.

With this solid data infrastructure and unshakable fact check, the OKB reinforces confidence in the Surinamese democratic process. Whether it is advanced voting computers in Brazil, Internet voting in Estonia, biometric registration in Kenya or the OKB's rigorous checks in Suriname, each case demonstrates that investment in objective data safeguards the quality of elections and thereby substantially increases the foundations of democracy itself.

Finally, with this article, I would like to reassure Surinamese society: keep faith in the integrity of the process and maintain peace of mind. Thanks to the non-partisan data analysis and strict control mechanisms of the OKB, you can count on a fair election. Stay calm, inform yourself through reliable sources and cast your vote based on facts, not rumors. Only in this way will we collectively strengthen our democracy and build a solid, forward-looking society.
