President Santokhi and his Guyanese counterpart Irfaan Ali have fruitful meeting

President Santokhi and his Guyanese counterpart Irfaan Ali further strengthened their ties Monday in Georgetown during a working visit that took place in an open and constructive atmosphere. Central to their deliberations was the accelerated realization of cross-border infrastructure, with the Corantine Bridge as the crown jewel of future cooperation.

According to the Communication Service Suriname, both heads of state explicitly stated that the Corantijn Bridge is no longer an ambition, but an inevitability. "This project is the key to economic integration and will radically change trade between Paramaribo and Georgetown," Santokhi said. Ali complemented that the bridge will be "monumental" to the development of both countries and will strengthen ties between their populations. In addition to physical connections, Santokhi and Ali discussed political agendas ahead of the scheduled re-elections later this year. Both reaffirmed their commitment to transparency and democratic processes. "Fair elections are the foundation for sustainable stability and growth," the presidents declared unison.

Modern themes such as digitization and the role of artificial intelligence in governance and diplomacy were also discussed. Santokhi praised Guyana's progressive approach to AI applications in public service delivery, while Ali complimented Suriname's use of social media channels to engage citizens in policymaking.

With their shared ambitions in the areas of energy, trade and infrastructure, the presidents once again underscored the firm belief that cooperation pays off. Santokhi returned to Paramaribo yesterday, armed with concrete agreements and a clear mandate to take the bilateral relationship with Georgetown to the next level.
